ITIS, the Integrated Taxonomic Information System, is a United States government authority on the scientific names of plants, animals, fungi and microbes. Its web service lets a caller search by scientific or common name, resolve a name to its Taxonomic Serial Number, retrieve a taxon's full record with rank, author, publication and taxonomic status, walk its parent and child hierarchy, and list accepted names and synonyms. No credentials required.
